Current role and title

T45WIME6 – Propulsion and Manoeuvring Key Hazard Certification for T45 Destroyer

My role is to ensure that the propulsion and manoeuvring system of the Type 45 Destroyer meets MoD safety standards. This is the first non legacy platform to undergo the JSP 430 Issue 3 certification process and the challenge is increased due to the innovative Integrated Electric Propulsion system architecture.

What attracted you to DESG:

Before I heard of the scheme, I had not even considered going to university. When the opportunity to go with substantial financial assistance was offered, I would have been an idiot if I had said no.

Highlights of your career to date:

I spent a 3 month placement with VT Shipbuilding constructing units for the T45 destroyer. As several units required delivery during my stay the work offered both a challenging and rewarding experience in that new problems presented themselves on a daily basis and frequently meant that both my knowledge and initiative was tested. It was a proud feeling to visit HMS Daring in Glasgow recently and see parts of the ship that I had helped build now attached.

What you hope to achieve in the future:

My immediate concern is to obtain an MSc in Naval Architecture from UCL. Beyond that, my current feeling is that I wish to concentrate on the ship construction aspect however something interesting could turn up and everything could change...

What advice would you give someone thinking of a career in the MOD:

Listen to the other people in your section. You won’t be there for ever and they can teach you more about the jobs you will do than any course could but don’t be afraid to question their logic either. And learn the Travel & Subsistence system too.
