Current role and title

I work as a graduate engineer (nuclear stream) with the Ministry of Defence, Defence Engineering and Science Group. As a part of the MoD DESG scheme I am currently on a four month secondment with Rolls-Royce, Derby. I am working in Procurement of Electrical, Control and Instrumentation and Primary Components for current fleet submarines (Swiftsure, Trafalgar and Vanguard Class) and for the new fleet of Astute Class submarines. I then plan on completing a 4-month secondment at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth.

What attracted you to the DESG Scheme?

The huge variety of roles first attracted me. The scheme allows graduates to carry out a variety of different placements within and outside the UK, working for the MoD and also seconded to related industries and armed forces. It is also an accredited IMechE scheme, which assists in gaining Chartership status. Other benefits include various training courses, additional qualifications and long-term career opportunities.

Highlights of your career to date

With the varied placements and Graduate Discussion Group (GDG) project, I have travelled the country and had the opportunity to participate in exciting things. I have visited and worked on all the different types of submarines currently in service, got my hands dirty and helped build the new Astute Class submarines, completed the Damage Repair Instructional Unit (DRIU) sinking ship simulation at Plymouth, completed Submarine Escape Training in Southampton and offered the opportunity to attend a 13-day submarine sea trial! These are just a few of my highlights!

What you hope to achieve in the future

My primary early objectives are to re-grade into a position within MoD Nuclear Propulsion and become a Chartered Engineer within a couple of years.

Further into the future I would like to continue to work up the MoD chain and work within the senior civil service.

What advice would you give someone thinking of a career in the MOD

The best piece of advice I can provide is that you get out of the scheme what you put in. If you work hard and use your initiative, you can work in some very exciting areas and participate in 'once in a lifetime' opportunities. Always talk to your colleagues and peers, as that is where great opportunities often arise. Most importantly, if you don't ask, you don't get!
