Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S)

What do they do?

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is the organisation that equips and supports the United Kingdom’s armed forces for current and future operations. It acquires and supports through-life, including disposal, equipment and services ranging from ships, aircraft, vehicles and weapons, to electronic systems and information services.

DE&S also satisfies ongoing requirements including food, clothing medical supplies, maintenance and temporary accommodation, as well as operating HM Naval Bases and joint supply chain for land, sea and air.

How do they work?

DE&S works closely with industry through partnering agreements and private finance initiatives in accordance with the Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) to deliver effective solutions for defence.

Formed from the merger of the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) and the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), with headquarters in Bristol, DE&S has around 29,000 people based at sites across the UK and abroad. It has an annual spend of £16 billion representing 43 per cent of the Defence Budget.

Defence Estates (DE)

What do they do?

Defence Estates ensures MoD land and property are managed and developed to meet the needs of the Armed Forces as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.

The estate infrastructure includes sophisticated and varied buildings and installations including air fields, dockyards, offices, hardened command centres and facilities designed for maintenance of weapons platforms and systems.

DE assists the MoD to develop estate policy and provides professional advice and support to the Armed Forces.

Staff are based predominantly in Sutton Coldfield (West Midlands), Portsmouth, Aldershot, Benson (Oxfordshire), Waterbeach (Cambridgeshire) and Rosyth (Fife).

How do they work?

DE staff work as project managers, works advisers, technical support and property managers. DE recently launched an industry-wide initiative to use prime contracting as its main method of procuring capital works and estate management. DE plays a significant project management role in the Integrated Project Teams needed to deliver and manage these contracts.

DE provides its services world wide and has staff in most of the major permanent military locations. Short-term overseas placements to Germany, Cyprus and Gibraltar can be arranged as part of your training programme.
